MTV NETWORKS DEPLOYS AKAMAI EDGESUITE ACROSS TOP WEB PROPERTIES

Popular sites mtv.com, nick.com, and sonicnet.com to benefit from distributed Web infrastructure and ESI for superior performance and reliability

Cambridge, MA - June 3, 2002 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), a leading provider of secure, outsourced e-business infrastructure services and software, today announced that MTV Networks, a division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE:VIA and VIA.B), has implemented the Akamai EdgeSuiteSM service across several of its most highly trafficked Web properties to facilitate online initiatives with maximum reach, reliability, and availability. Popular sites including mtv.com, nick.com, and sonicnet.com will benefit from EdgeSuite's built-in support for Edge Side Includes (ESI), a proposed industry standard, to assemble and deliver highly dynamic Web pages with minimized infrastructure strain and reduced costs.

MTV Networks owns and operates many of the most popular basic cable television programming services, including MTV: Music Television, Nickelodeon, and VH1. As a globally recognized brand with innovative Web properties designed for a worldwide audience, MTV Networks requires a highly scalable and reliable platform upon which to deliver its dynamic Web content, streaming media, and applications with top performance. As an alternative to traditional hosting infrastructure, which would have to be expanded internationally at significant expense, MTV Networks deployed the Akamai EdgeSuite service and ESI functionality to reduce the load on its application servers and thereby increase performance while cutting future costs.

"Working with Akamai allows MTV Networks to push the envelope of Internet distribution by providing a secure, scalable platform from which to reach our global audience," said Nick Rockwell, CTO, MTV Networks Online. "The EdgeSuite service and integrated ESI functionality provide us with an efficient, distributed, high-performance infrastructure, sparing us the cost and headaches of continually building out to catch up with the exploding demand for our Internet properties."

"MTV Networks has attracted a fast-growing, global Web audience with its unique network of sites, and we're pleased that EdgeSuite will play a role in supporting its innovative Web efforts with greater scale and cost efficiency," said Michael Ruffolo, executive vice president, Global Sales, Services and Marketing, Akamai. "We're excited to work with forward-looking companies like MTV Networks to demonstrate the performance and cost-saving benefits of ESI and edge computing."

ESI is an open markup language created to define Web page fragments, such as stock quotes, headlines, and catalog prices, for dynamic aggregation, assembly, and delivery at the Internet's edge. As a result, businesses can develop highly dynamic Web pages and applications that are assembled at the edge of the data center, or at the edge of the Internet, for improved performance and simplified infrastructure requirements. This is critical as more and more businesses seek to evolve their Web presence beyond static content. With built-in support for ESI, EdgeSuite can assemble and deliver targeted Web pages from locations optimized for each end user, reducing strain on a company's centralized, origin infrastructure.

EdgeSuite is an integrated suite of outsourced services designed to fulfill a broad range of e-business infrastructure needs, including content and application delivery, content targeting, and business intelligence, while providing unmatched scalability and continual uptime for an enterprise's global Web operations.
